Box office collection : Race 2 joins Rs 100 crore club

Mumbai, Feb 9: Filmmaker Abbas-Mustan’s action thriller Race 2 becomes the first film of 2013 to enter Rs 100 crore club by grossing Rs. 100.45 crore. The movie made at a budget of Rs 60 crore was released on January 25 worldwide and has now collected Rs 100.45 crore in two weeks of its release.

Trade analyst, Taran Adarsh tweeted saying: "Race2 collected approx Rs. 24.35 cr nett in Week 2. Grand total: approx Rs. 100.45 cr nett". Made on big budget of Rs 60 crore, the film had collected Rs 79 crore in the domestic box-office". 'Race 2’ made 76.1 crore in the first week and made 24 crore in its second week. Gradually, the film collection decreased but comparing to the six movies released thereafter, ‘Race 2’ was the first priority for the audience.
‘Race 2’ is the sequel to 2008 blockbuster ‘Race’ starring Saif Ali Khan, Anil Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham and Ameesha Patel in the lead role. Anil Kapoor reprise the role of the cop and Ameesh Patel replaced Sameera Reddy to play Anil's assistant.
'Race 2' rides high on emotions and style. The high octane thriller has many twists and turns. This is the first time in which John Abraham and Saif Ali Khan paired together. Deepika Padukone played Saif's ladylove in the movie. The lead actress of the original Bipasha Basu also had a small role to play. The sequel starts from where the first part ended.
Though critics rated the movie average, audience gave thumps-up to it.

The movie opened excellently collecting 15.10 cr nett on its first day of release and raked in Rs 35 crore within two days of the release at the box office. And, within one week of its release, the multi-starrer film had collected Rs 79 crore at the domestic box-office. On the 8th day of release, the film crossed 100 cr nett worldwide.

The collection of Race 2 declined by 50-60 percent in the second week, but it was still better than other new releases. The film maintained a steady pace during the weekdays despite new releases in the second week. Last week, six new movies hit the theatres, but “Race 2″ had the highest number of audience.

However, Race 2 got benefit of the controversies that happened to Kamal Haasan starrer Vishawroopam and it did not face any competition with other movie releases.

The film is expected to finish with 110-120 cr nett in its lifetime collections and worldwide collection is expected to end up with 160-170 cr nett. This is a very good result for the film.infact a Blockbuster, 2013 starts of with a great Note with Race 2 success

Critical reception
Race 2 received mixed reviews from critics. Madhureeta Mukherjee of Times of India rated Race2 3 out of 5 star while commenting "Heists, hot-babes, roulette, raging cars, gizmos and gags — Director duo, Abbas-Mustan have thrown in everything with pompous grandeur, save for a riveting plot that shocks or stuns. Rubina A Khan of The First Post gave it 3 out of 5 stars, adding, "Race 2 delivers what it promises — good looking ensemble cast, exotic locations, cars, bomb squads, revenge, lust and love, a couple of good music tracks and, most importantly, a plot which unravels at a thrilling pace. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave 2.5 out of 5 stars and said "The writing isn't watertight, the film lacks a hit score, the climax is far from effective and overall, Race 2 pales in comparison to Race." Race 2 gets negative reviews everywhere.
Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN award it a score of 2.5 out of 5 whule commenting "The film has no intellectual pretentions; its only ambition is to offer a good time. In that, it mostly succeeds. Anupama Chopra of Hindustantimes gave 2 out of 5, reviewing, "Race 2 is essentially a big-budget cartoon in which coolness is all. The director duo Abbas-Mustan have no pretensions about what they are making — full-on masala with a dash of revenge, a slice of heist and characters who are either strutting their chiselled bodies in slow motion or betraying each other. Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV gave it a score of 1.5 out of 5 and feels "This is a wreck of a movie strictly for action junkies who might be looking for a feverish two-and-a-half-hour ride that is far more giddy than heady.

Box office Race 2 had a good opening at both multiplexes and single screens with occupancy of around 60-70% range, in domestic market. The film had a very good opening day, netting 14.25 crores.The film showed 37% growth in its second day, collecting approx. 17.50 crore nett. Race 2 did well on its first weekend by collecting around 46.25 crore nett by collecting around 14.50 crore on Sunday.Race 2 dropped on Monday as it collected around 6 crore nett. Despite dropping collections after the weekend,the film managed to do well and netted around 69.58 crore in its first week. Race 2 did pretty well on its second Friday collecting around 3.25 crore nett. Race 2 had a decent second weekend and collected around 14 crore nett with first Sunday collections going to around 6 crore nett plus. The film has collected around 83.50 crore nett in 10 days.The collections on its second Monday were a decent 2 crore nett approx. The four day business in week two is 16 crore nett approx. Overseas Race 2 had a good opening in overseas with $3.25 million approx in opening weekend

'Race2' vrooms back into theatres powered by the Abbas-Mustan fuel of style, slickness and sexiness. yes, it has all the fast cars, lambhorghinis blowing up even, jet planes, Audis (most decidedly Audis) & bikes & horses too. Exotic Turkey made to look even more exotic & beckoning. Yes, it has dollops of hot gals and bronzed bikini bodies, and plenty of testosterone & 6 packs thrown in too. Saif is back as Ranveer Singh, the man with the plan. he joins hands with John (Arman Mallick) Abraham & his step-sista Deepika Padukone (Elena) and John's gal Jacqueline Fernandez. Anil Kapoor plays the corrupt cop, now retired, and doubling up as a corrupt bar-runner RD with his blonde assistant Sameera Reddy replaced by a blonder Amisha Patel (Cherry). Of course, there are even double-meaning, sleazy jokes on 'popping the Cherry', fruit shapes and juicy frootees. What is sadly slowing down this race is the fuel needed from a good story. The characters are not as twisted as in the earlier part, and are predictable. The story is slow and the 2nd part falls apart, turning into a spy-kids flick with gizmos and outlandish plots to steal artefacts worth 20 billion dollars no less. Deepika looks smoking hot, sensatonal but has not much to do. Jacqueline ecen less, apart from a stylish fencing sequence with Saif. Amisha plays the fruitcake blonde to perfection. Saif is very good, John is wasted and Anil gets more obscene but still carries it off inspite of a small role. Music falls short of part 1 and overall a lot is missing. But watchable for its style and slickness, so what if a story is missing and the twists are predictable. Still a watchable 3 stars from me.

Hindi movie Race 2, which is a sequel to big hit movie Race, has concluded the first weekend with a fantastic collection at the Indian Box Office. The Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham and Anil Kapoor starrer has topped the business chart, while another new release Akaash Vani landed in the second place. It has surpassed Rs 50 crore mark at the domestic business centres in three days and has become the biggest opener of 2013. Race 2, which was released in 3,200 screens across the country on January 25, opened to a robust response at the domestic Box Office on the first day of its release on Friday with its occupancy ranging between 70% and 80%. The Abbas-Mastan-directed action thriller witnessed a big jump in its business on Saturday due to Republic day holiday. It showed further improvement on Sunday. The much-hyped and much-awaited film Race 2 has collected Rs 51.35 crores nett at the domestic Box Office in the (3 days) first weekend and fast heading towards Rs 100 crore mark. Its breakup is Rs 15.12 cr on Fri, Rs 20.72 cr on Sat and Rs 15.51 cr on Sun. It has beaten the first weekend collection record of Saif Ali Khan and John Abraham's big hits like Cocktail (Rs 36 crores) and Housefull 2 (Rs 43.5 crores). However, Race 2 is set to become the first Rs 100 crore grosser movie in 2013. Will it cross this mark in the first week? Trade experts say that usually, the business of a movie drops by 50%. If this Race 2 also stick to this rule, it will not be able to cross this mark. It might achieve this magic figure in the second weekend.
